Employee engagement: Check-ups aren’t just for patients

Research shows that the more engaged your employees are, the better your organization performs. But, how do you know if your employees are engaged? One way is to ask them. Check-ups aren’t just for patients, they are important for employees as well. Don’t assume since you have not heard any grumblings lately that your employees are happy and feeling part-of-the-team. Check in with your employees often, and ask them directly how things are going. Here are a few questions that you can ask them today to make them feel you care about them and want to know how they are doing.

• What about your job gets you out of bed in the morning?
• What makes you wish it was your day off?
• What is one thing we could do better?
• What has been your favorite job in your career and why?

As a manager, you have a responsibility to check in with your staff (often) and learn about issues that might be negatively affecting them and then work to address them. Happy employees = employee retention. Employees are your greatest asset, ask, listen, then act!
